Holiness in Heels

It’s easy to think of holiness as a list of to-do’s and not to-do’s. But you can simply think of a pair of high heels. Why? It’s not “the higher the heel, the closer to heaven”, but it goes back to a tropical night in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.

We were just coming out of a family reunion but wanted to spend more time together, so we went to Viejo San Juan to walk through the old-time classical streets of the island’s capital. There was salsa music playing, people dancing in the streets, piraguas being sold from kiosks… everything a Puertorican night should be. It was captivatingly beautiful… and excruciatingly painful. I was still in my heels from the reunion and the streets were paved with antique cobblestone! It didn’t take long for me and anyone else in heels to become practically disabled, no lie. I needed someone to lean on in order to even walk! My niece had to be carried. We were a sad, grateful mess, as our family held us up and kept us moving.

That’s holiness: a complete reliance on God to carry you through. It’s not anything we can produce on our own, but we are righteous only as His reflection. We will not be able to walk this journey unless we are leaning on Him. And the more you do, the holier you become, like clay being pressed into His image, and maybe a higher heel, closer to Him. ☆
